Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling – Reviews

Whether you’re a novice snorkeler or a seasoned underwater enthusiast, finding the perfect camera can elevate your marine exploration to new depths.

The following five cameras have been tried, tested and extensively researched to provide you with peace of mind that you are making a great decision.

GoPro HERO10 Black – Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling Overall

Renowned as one of the best action cameras of all time, the GoPro HERO 10 was designed for all types of adventure.

Falling under the adventure bracket, the GoPro HERO 10 is undoubtedly the best underwater camera for snorkeling in my opinion.

Offering unparalleled features that elevate your marine adventures to extraordinary levels, this camera always delivers.

With its rugged and waterproof design, the HERO 10 can dive up to 33 feet without the need for a separate housing.

I once had the HERO 4 and whilst it worked great at the time, the need for waterproof housing was inconvenient.

It also made the camera more bulky and I always worried that I hadn’t secured it properly and it may leak.

As the HERO 10 itself is waterproof, all worries are eliminated.

The camera’s exceptional image quality, powered by a 23.6 mp sensor, captures stunning 5.3K video and 23mp photos.

For both still images and video, it preserves the vivid colors and intricate details of the underwater world.

The improved HyperSmooth stabilization technology guarantees buttery-smooth footage, even in choppy waters.

The image stabilization on the HERO 10 is simply outstanding and I continue to be impressed by it.

Additionally, the SuperPhoto feature automatically optimizes photos with HDR and improved scene detection ensuring picture-perfect images with minimal effort.

Plus, its compact size and lightweight build make it easy to carry and snorkel with.

For me, the GoPro HERO 10 is the ultimate underwater camera for snorkeling.

Combining exceptional image quality, advanced stabilization and user-friendly features in a rugged and compact package, I am sold.

Waterproofing

Waterproof up to 33ft. This is perfect for snorkeling and incredible for an underwater camera of this price tag.

Size

Extremely small and compact in design. It will fit into almost any pocket and even the palm of your hand. Its tiny size does not impact on settings, function or image quality making it a powerhouse camera.

Low Light Performance

Whilst earlier models have struggled in low light, the HERO 10 performs extremely well. Even in dimly lit conditions as you dive deeper, this camera delivers beautiful and detailed images.

Image Stabilization

Features GoPro’s outstanding HyperSmooth technology. This image stabilization is incredibly advanced achieving great results that are super smooth.

Image Quality

Captures 23mp photos for the most beautiful oceanic images.

Video Quality

Sensation 5.3K video capturing ensuring your underwater adventure is extremely detailed and true to life. This is by far one of the best and most impressive features of the GoPro HERO 10.

“Whilst GoPro has released many HERO models, in my opinion, the GoPro HERO10 Black remains the most superior. This is arguably the best underwater camera for snorkeling.”

Olympus TG-6 – Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling For Toughness

The Olympus TG-6 is undeniably great underwater camera for snorkeling,

Renowned for its rugged design, its tough exterior allows it to withstand water, dust and shock.

This makes it a reliable companion for adventurous snorkelers exploring the depths.

Not only is it waterproof up to 15m, you can also purchase compatible waterproof housing elevating this to depths of up to 45m.

The TG-6 also works well in low light conditions, ensuring remarkable image quality and reduced noise when capturing below the surface.

Whilst there are better options for low light performance, its low light capabilities still deliver stunning results even in dimly lit underwater scenes.

Image stabilization is also great on the TG-6.

It counteracts the effects of camera shake caused by water movements, ensuring that your underwater footage remains steady and clear.

I found this helped me to capture the enchanting marine life with precision and stability.

The TG-6 also offers a wide range of underwater shooting modes including Underwater Microscope and Underwater HDR.

This allows you to explore the underwater world from new perspectives and capture breathtaking details and contrasts.

Without even mentioning the great image quality and 4K video, the Olympus TG-6 is the perfect companion for snorkeling.

Its tough design, impressive low light performance and image stabilization document the beauty of the underwater world with clarity and ease.

Waterproofing

Boasts a tough design that is waterproof up to 15m. You can also purchase waterproof housing that enhances this to up to 45m.

Size

Compact and lightweight camera, similar size to a standard point and shoot camera.

Low Light Performance

Possibly the most disappointing low light performance of the five cameras but still works well. You can achieve crisp, clear images even in difficult lighting conditions. The main let down is that the auto focus struggles as higher ISO’s.

Image Stabilization

Decent image stabilization that works really well to enhance both stills and videos.

Image Quality

Whilst this camera only features a 12 mp sensor, the results are great. The TG-6 certainly doesn’t compromise on quality in favor of its tough features.

Video Quality

Great 4K video resolution that can capture beautiful underwater movies.

“I think the Olympus TG-6 is the perfect camera if you require one for action that can also work underwater. It is a great all-rounder.”

Sony Alpha 7R V – Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling For Photo Quality

The Sony Alpha 7R V is undeniably the best choice for snorkelers seeking unparalleled image and video quality.

Packed with cutting-edge technology, this mirrorless camera delivers stunning results both above and below the water’s surface.

Boasting an impressive 61 mp full frame sensor, it captures strikingly sharp and detailed images.

I was seriously impressed and found it allowed me to immortalize the vibrant marine life in all its glory.

When it comes to video recording, the Alpha 7R V truly shines.

Capable of shooting 8K, it captures extremely cinematic clips that capture every nuance of your underwater adventures.

The camera’s exceptional low light performance ensures that even in the deeper and darker waters, your videos retain clarity and vibrant color.

While the Sony Alpha 7R V is not waterproof, it has compatible underwater housings specifically designed for snorkeling and diving.

These housings provide excellent protection allowing you to take the camera down to impressive depths without compromising its functionality.

With these specialized housings, snorkelers can confidently explore the beauty beneath the waves with an outstanding camera.

However, the housing can be pretty bulky.

Whilst most of the housing options are lightweight underwater, the size can hinder the snorkeling experience.

Casual snorkelers may find this inconvenient and this camera may therefore be more suited to professionals.

But its outstanding image quality and video capabilities make it an indispensable tool for anyone looking to document the underwater world with professional-grade results.

Waterproofing

The camera itself is not waterproof but there is an extensive variety of waterproof housing options to choose from. I used the Sea & Sea Universal Housing as I already had it for another camera and it worked great. However, the Ikelite housing for the Sony Alpha 7R V is waterproof up to a staggering 200m.

Size

The camera itself is compact in design but for underwater shooting, the overall size depends on the housing you choose. A lot of the housing options for this camera can be bulky. For the most lightweight, choose one of the polycarbonate housing units.

Low Light Performance

The Alpha 7R V has exceptional low light performance. It works phenomenally in dim underwater conditions capturing the true color and detail. Up to ISO 6400, images have no noise. Whilst it starts to creep in past this point, quality is still great.

Image Stabilization

The 5-axis image stabilization on this camera is simply outstanding. Videos are super smooth and images are blur free.

Image Quality

When it comes to image quality, Sony Alpha 7R V is the standout camera of the five. The sharpness and vibrancy of still images is magnificent. Even at ISO’s of up to 12,800, images are incredibly crisp.

Video Quality

This camera has exceptional 8K video capabilities. In terms of video quality, this camera is simply unrivaled. The most professional video opportunities available and sensational true-to-life detail.

“If you are looking for professional-quality results, I cannot recommend the Sony Alpha 7R V enough.”

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II – Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling For Beginners

The Canon G7X Mark II is an excellent underwater camera for snorkeling due to its remarkable features and user-friendly design.

It is particularly great for those both new to photography and/or new to snorkeling as it is incredibly easy to use.

Its exceptional low light performance allows snorkelers to capture vibrant and detailed images even in dimly lit underwater environments.

Plus, the camera’s efficient image stabilization technology works well to reduce the impact of shaky movements.

Perfect for beginners, the G7X Mark II is easy to use with its simple controls and straightforward menu system.

This allows snorkelers of all skill levels to focus on their underwater experiences while still capturing stunning photos and videos effortlessly.

However, a minor drawback is that it doesn’t shoot in 4K resolution.

While it records high quality 1080p videos, some users may desire the higher resolution for ultra-detailed footage.

Despite this limitation, the Canon G7X Mark II remains an outstanding choice for snorkeling adventures.

Waterproofing

This camera is not waterproof but does have great waterproof housing. There are a wide variety of different waterproof housing options to choose from that allow the camera to go down to depths of 60m.

Size

Although the camera is a compact size, the housing options can add a lot of bulk. The Ikelite housing is polycarbonate making it the most lightweight and neatest to carry.

Low Light Performance

The great ISO range and fast auto focus provide the G7X Mark II with brilliant low light performance.

Image Stabilization

Boasts its own in-lens image stabilization which works beautifully for blur-free images and smooth video.

Image Quality

Produces beautiful high-resolution images thanks to its 20.2 mp sensor and great auto focus always keeping things crisp and detailed.

Video Quality

Only records at a maximum of 1080p which is a downside of this camera. However, it is great for beginners and those who do not require the highest professional-quality results.

“I think the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is the perfect camera for beginners. It is no secret that this is the most popular vlogging camera and with the underwater housing, you can easily capture the marine world with ease.”

GoPro HERO11 Black – Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling For Low Light

The GoPro HERO 11 is an exceptional underwater camera that excels in capturing unforgettable snorkeling moments.

Built with durability in mind, the HERO 11 is waterproof up 33ft, making it the perfect companion for snorkelers.

Its compact and rugged design allows for easy handling and ensures it can withstand the demands of underwater adventures.

With its advanced image and video capabilities, the HERO 11 delivers stunning 5.6K footage capturing every detail of the underwater world in stunning clarity.

To add to the versatility, the camera’s wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing the vastness of the ocean environment.

The HERO 11 features impressive HyperSmooth image stabilization, ensuring that your snorkeling footage remains steady and shake-free.

Overall, the GoPro HERO 11 is a top-notch underwater camera that delivers exceptional performance, durability and ease of use.

Whilst the HERO 11 is an incredible camera and the next level up from the HERO 10, I personally preferred the 10.

This is simply because as it is technically an older model, it is a lot cheaper but with almost identical capabilities.

Waterproofing

Waterproof up to 33ft like its predecessor.

Size

Beautiful compact size and design that is super easy to take snorkeling with you.

Low Light Performance

Great low light performance including dedicated Night Effects designed for shooting after dark. These effects also work well in dark underwater settings.

Image Stabilization

Also features the award-winning HyperSmooth image stabilization technology. Images are blur free and video is beautifully smooth.

Image Quality

Captures beautiful 27 mp still images plus, you can take 24.7 mp stills from video.

Video Quality

Shoots 5.6K video with a stunning cinematic feel.

“There is no doubt that the GoPro HERO11 Black boasts the best GoPro features to make the most incredible HERO ever released.”

How to Buy the Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling

From water resistance and image quality to portability and user-friendly features, there are several features that will help you capture stunning underwater moments with ease.

My tips will help you make the perfect choice for your snorkeling escapades.

Water Proofing

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that waterproofing is paramount for an underwater camera.

You need a camera to withstand the harsh aquatic environment and preserve its functionality at varying depths.

Snorkeling often involves exploring depths of up to 10 meters making it crucial for the camera to have adequate water resistance.

Dedicated waterproof cameras or those housed in waterproof casings ensure that water and pressure do not damage internal components.

Cameras specifically designed for underwater use are superior as they eliminate the need for additional waterproof housing.

This streamlines your equipment and reduces the risk of leaks.

When choosing an underwater camera, prioritize those with reliable waterproofing.

This is because they provide the confidence to capture breathtaking marine life and submerged landscapes without compromising the camera’s performance and durability.

On the other hand, some non-waterproof cameras can still become snorkeling companions when housed in compatible waterproof casings.

It’s all about weighing up the pros and cons.

Size

A compact underwater camera is the ideal choice for snorkeling due to its portability and ease of use.

Snorkeling requires freedom of movement and a compact camera allows you to focus on exploring the underwater world without bulky gear.

A compact size also makes it more convenient to carry and handle while swimming.

Compact underwater cameras also often come with simple settings making them user-friendly even for beginners.

With a compact underwater camera, you can capture stunning marine life and breathtaking underwater landscapes with ease.

Low Light Performance

Great low light performance is crucial for an underwater snorkeling camera to capture the vibrant marine life and stunning underwater scenery.

As snorkeling often involves exploring deeper depths where natural light diminishes, this is essential.

A camera with excellent low light capabilities ensures images are crisp, detailed and vibrant without excessive noise.

Several factors contribute to low light performance in an underwater camera.

A larger sensor gathers more light resulting in better image quality.

A great performing ISO range ensures that images remain clear and noise-free in low light.

Additionally, image stabilization helps counteract camera shake, especially in low light conditions, producing sharper images.

The ability to handle low light situations effectively enables snorkelers to capture the underwater world with clarity and brilliance.

Image Stabilization

Image stabilization is also important for shooting underwater due to the challenges of capturing steady footage in the aquatic environment.

Underwater conditions can be unpredictable with movements that cause camera shake and blur.

Image stabilization technology counters these effects, ensuring smooth and steady footage even in turbulent waters.

It allows you to capture the vibrant marine life and stunning underwater landscapes with clarity and precision.

By having reliable image stabilization, your underwater camera ensures that every moment is beautifully documented and immortalized.

Image Quality

Image quality is always important in photography but paramount for underwater photography.

This is because capturing photos in this challenging environment requires precise clarity and color accuracy.

Underwater conditions can be unpredictable with varying water clarity, lighting and moving subjects making it already tricky to achieve great shots.

A camera with excellent image quality ensures that even in such challenging circumstances, the photos captured retain their sharpness, vibrancy and fine details.

Many underwater cameras compromise on image quality due to the complexities of underwater shooting.

But investing in a camera with top-notch image capabilities ensures that your underwater memories are preserved in stunning clarity.

Video Quality

An underwater camera with great video quality allows you to relive the captivating moments of your aquatic adventures in vivid detail.

Underwater scenes are ever-changing with marine life and movements that can sometimes be difficult to capture in still images.

Video allows for more fluidity and is more reliable in capturing the moment.

High video resolution and frame rates ensure that every underwater encounter is recorded with precision and cinematic appeal.

Whether documenting colorful coral reefs or encounters with fascinating sea creatures, superior video quality enhances the immersive experience.

This enables you to relive your experience and share the beauty of the underwater world with others.

Best Underwater Camera for Snorkeling – My Verdict

When it comes to action and underwater adventure, GoPro has set the bar for me.

I loved both the HERO 10 and HERO 11.

They are both sensational cameras, especially for their size and price tag.

Both still images and videos are phenomenal.

However, the HERO 10 just beats the 11 for me as it is almost the same camera but at a fraction of the price.

Alternatively, if you want an everyday camera that is also great for underwater shooting, the Sony Alpha 7R V and Canon Powershot G7X Mark II are great options.

All five cameras deliver insane results underwater, it ultimately depends on what you are wanting from your camera.
